Nine days of fruit: what to eat during Navratri vrat

September 22, 2026

Navratri 2026 · 11–19 October
From our orchards in Upper Shimla & Kinnaur

Fruit is one of the few things allowed in every version of a Navratri vrat. Which means for nine days, it stops being a snack and starts being the meal.

Most fasting guides give you a list and move on. That is fine for one day. For nine, the question is different — what actually keeps you going from morning until evening without leaving you hollow by four o'clock, and what is still good on day eight after sitting in a bowl on the counter.

We farm apples in Himachal, so we have an obvious interest here. But the honest answer to which fruit to eat during Navratri is: several, in rotation. Eating only one gets tiring by the third day, and that is when people break a fast.

Which fruits are allowed in Navratri vrat

All fresh fruit is permitted. There is no fruit that is traditionally excluded from a Navratri fast, which is unusual — almost everything else on a vrat plate comes with conditions.

Fruit Why it works for a fast
Apple Firm, filling, needs no preparation, and keeps for weeks. The fallback fruit for most people.
Banana Quick energy when you feel low. Soft, so easy to eat first thing.
Pomegranate In season in October. Refreshing, and the seeds make it feel like a proper dish rather than a snack.
Papaya Gentle on an empty stomach, which matters on the later days.
Guava High in fibre, very filling. Eat it earlier in the day rather than late.
Pear Juicy and cooling. Good in the afternoon when a fast feels longest.
Chikoo Naturally sweet, satisfying when you want something that tastes like a treat.
Melon & grapes Mostly water. Useful alongside the others, not as the main thing.

Dates and nuts are permitted too and worth keeping nearby — a few alongside fruit changes how long it holds you.

Why apples end up being the one

Ask anyone who has kept a nine-day vrat what they ate and apples come up first. There are practical reasons, and none of them are about the apple being special.

  • It needs nothing done to it. No peeling, no cutting, no plate. That matters on a working day.
  • It travels. Into a bag, to an office, on a train. Most fruit does not survive that.
  • It keeps. Buy once at the start of Navratri and it is still good on the last day, which is not true of a papaya or a banana.
  • The fibre holds you. A crisp apple takes longer to eat and sits with you longer than something soft and juicy.

The fruit you actually eat on day seven is the one that was still worth eating on day seven.

Eat the skin

Most of an apple's fibre is in the skin. Peel it and you have removed a good part of what makes it filling — which is precisely the thing you want during a fast.

Wash it properly, do not peel it. Which brings up something worth knowing before you buy fruit for nine days of eating it skin-on.

How to check whether an apple is waxed

Hold it under hot running water and rub it with your thumb, or scrape the skin gently with the back of a spoon. If a whitish, greasy residue lifts off, that is a coating — not the apple. Most apples sold in India are coated with food-grade wax so they shine and last longer in storage. It is legal and it is not dangerous. But if you are going to eat the skin every day for nine days, it is reasonable to want to know it is there.

An uncoated apple looks duller. The skin is matte, sometimes a little uneven, and it will not reflect the light back at you. That flatness is the giveaway, and it is also the point.

What is in season right now

Navratri falls in the middle of October, which in Himachal is the tail of the apple harvest. The high orchards — ours run between 9,000 and 12,000 feet — are the last to ripen and are being picked during exactly these weeks.

In season during Navratri

Red Royal Delicious

Deep red, firm, sweet. Holds its crunch for weeks, which is what you want across nine days.

Golden

Softer crunch, honeyed rather than sharp. Good for anyone who finds a very crisp apple hard work.

Pomegranate

At its peak in October. The one fruit on this list that makes a vrat meal feel like a meal.

Storing fruit for nine days

  • Apples go in the crisper drawer, not the fridge door. Three to four weeks there, about a week on the counter.
  • Keep bananas separate. They release a gas that ripens everything around them, and it will take your apples and pears down with it.
  • Leave pomegranates out at room temperature unless the house is very warm.
  • Wash just before eating, not in advance. Washed fruit sitting in the fridge spoils faster.

A note on how much

We are apple farmers, not doctors, so we will not tell you what a fast should look like. What we will say is that fruit alone, eaten in small amounts across a long day, leaves many people lightheaded by evening. Water matters as much as the fruit does. And if a fast leaves you unwell, that is worth listening to rather than pushing through — every tradition makes room for that.

Picked this week, not last season

Our Kinnaur orchards are being picked through October — the last and highest of our 2026 harvest. No wax, no colour spray, no cold storage. Your box is picked after you order.

Questions people ask

When is Navratri 2026?

Sharad Navratri runs from 11 to 19 October 2026, with Dussehra on 20 October. Dates can move by a day depending on the panchang your family follows, so check locally.

Can we eat apples during Navratri fasting?

Yes. Apples are among the most commonly eaten fruits during vrat — they need no preparation, travel well, and keep across the full nine days.

Is apple skin allowed during vrat?

Yes, and it is where most of the fibre is. Wash the fruit well rather than peeling it. If the skin feels slippery, that is a coating rather than the apple.

Which apple variety is best for fasting?

A firm one. Red Royal Delicious and Golden both hold their texture well and are in season in Himachal through October, so they can be eaten close to when they were picked.

Can I eat dry fruits during Navratri?

Yes, dates, nuts and dried fruit are permitted in most traditions and are worth keeping alongside fresh fruit — they change how long a fruit meal holds you.

How do I stop fruit going bad over nine days?

Apples in the crisper drawer, bananas kept apart from everything else, pomegranates at room temperature, and wash only what you are about to eat.
